Keeping your browser under control

The Problem:

Automation is both a blessing and a curse. Your browser, for example, will do a terrific job of automatically completing online forms, web addresses you’ve recently visited and even logins and passwords. All you have to do is set it up to do these simple tasks. But automated functions can go too far, leaving you unnecessarily exposed.

The Solution:

As a rule of thumb, you don’t want your logins and passwords – let alone your mailing address – sitting in a file on your computer somewhere, even if you’ve fortified your system against all the evil things lurking around the nearest network. Nothing is absolutely, positively safe. Besides, what’s wrong with having to recall your logins and passwords every time you need access? It’s good for the brain!  And doesn’t require that much time to type in.

If you’re using Internet Explorer, here’s how to remove saved passwords and keep those automated content features under control:

1.  Start Internet Explorer

2.  Click on “Tools” > “Internet Options” > “Content”

3.  Click on “Auto Complete”

4.  Choose the settings you want by checking or unchecking the items listed under the heading “Use AutoComplete for.” (I don’t use AutoComplete at all. This means I leave all items unchecked. Decide for yourself what is best for you. However, if you do use AutoComplete, be sure to check “Prompt Me to Save Passwords” so you will have at least some degree of security.)

5.      To clear all the content currently stored on your computer, click “Clear Forms” and then click OK…and then click on “Clear Passwords” and then click OK.

If you use FireFox:

1. Start FireFox

2. Click Tools > “Options” > “Privacy”

3. Click “Clear All” to clear all the info collected to date

To configure your computer for future browsing, click on each of the subheadings and set it up accordingly. For example, click “Save Form Information” and uncheck “Save information I enter in web page forms and the Search Bar.”

For passwords, click “Saved Passwords” and uncheck “Remember Passwords.”

Click OK.
