Security Screens in Las Vegas

James Kerr

One of the great things about Las Vegas is the relative ease you can get into and out of the city.  As you can imagine, it's in the best interest of the major casinos, for example, to ensure there are plenty of direct and inexpensive flights to and from Las Vegas.

The one downside of living here is the amount of crime.  Based on 100,000 people, Nevada ranks 8th in the nation for the highest burglary rates.  Maybe it's the transient nature of places like Las Vegas and Reno.  Or maybe it's the down-on-your-luck aspect that comes with gambling which contributes to crime, in general.

In any case, my wife feels a bit unsafe when I'm away on business.  Her first impulse was to get a big dog for protection but we don't have enough space for one.  We decided on security screens instead.

Now, there's only one player in Las Vegas for this type of product.  Over the years they have enjoyed a monopoly on security doors and windows for the home.  So I was expecting a healthy markup on their product...

To our surprise, their quote was outrageous:  $14K for 14 windows.  There had to be a less expensive alternative.

After searching online for several days, I discovered there are only 3 manufacturers in the USA and of those there was one I really liked.

So I hopped on a plane, flew to Mississippi and spent the day with the founder and patriarch of TAPCO screens.  They have been in business for over 50 years.

In fact, I liked the product and the people and the market space so much I acquired the rights to Nevada!

My company is called Boss Security Screens.  I guess now we can say we help keep people safe whether the bad guys are try to get in via the computer OR the window.

To be continued...
